When I started subbing last year I was fortunate enough to become good friends with the mom of a little boy in my class.  We are sooooo much alike and her kids are just great.  I love when we’re both subbing in the same building because we’ll take the kids to Chic Fil A after school and let them play while we catch up.  It makes my heart happy.  She’s one of my biggest ‘real life’ blog supporters and I just adore her.  So when I mentioned this 12 days series and how I wanted to put up a kid craft she immediately volunteered her kids for my project!  Aren’t they just the sweetest?

I think a Christmas gift from a child is so much sweeter when it’s made with little hands.  I did make these myself but only because we live about 45 minutes away from each other and the kids decorated them in a classroom after school one day.  These salt dough ornaments are so easy to make with your little ones with only 3 ingredients and the option to skip the oven.

Turn them into any shape you want and if you’ve got a wee one celebrating his or her first Christmas this is a great way to commemorate it with a hand or footprint ornament!  What grandparent wouldn’t love that?!  If I make these again I’ll roll them a little thicker.  I’m a little concerned they won’t last for more than a few years because they’re kind of thin but the kids didn’t care much 😉

Ingredients

1 cup salt
1 cup flour
1/2 cup warm water

Directions

1. Combine salt and flour with a fork and then slowly stir in warm water.
2. Roll about a quarter to a half of an inch thick and cut with the cookie cutter of your choice.  I rolled my dough onto the cookie sheet so they wouldn’t stretch as I transferred them.
3. Make sure you poke a hole at the top so you can hang them then bake at 200 degrees for 3 to 4 hours, flipping halfway through or leave them out overnight to dry out.

The kiddos had so much fun decorating them and when they were finished I just sprayed them with a coat of mod podge to keep the paint from flaking.  I used a ribbon to hang them on the tree.

The kids are so excited to give these to their teachers as gifts but I think they’d also make cute gifts for grandparents, friends, or faraway relatives, too!

These came out great! What a fabulous little artist. I've been wanting to do these with my kids and am going to try to give it a try this weekend.

They had so much fun painting these! One kiddo is way more interested in painting that the other but they all turned out great!

What I love about this recipe is that it's totally kid friendly from start to finish because you can skip the oven step and just let them sit out overnight to dry out before painting!

Oh my goodness, that would be so cute! Maybe even the cats if you could get them to sit still long enough :)
