Creamy cheese cherry toaster strudels take me back to my childhood! Serve these babies up for breakfast or dessert!
As a kid, I was obsessed with poptarts and toaster strudels as breakfast food. As a college student, I ate them during late night study sessions. And my favorites by far were apple and cream cheese and cherry!
There was just something so decadent but comforting about that buttery flaky pastry crust, sweet cherry filling, and creamy melty cream cheese. And then you could drizzle on that glaze or leave it off and enjoy plain. Either way.
They were heaven as a kid and just enough of a pick me up as a bleary-eyed college student to make them worth it.
These days I leave them on the shelf more often than not. But every once in awhile I walk past them in the store and my mouth waters and I remember cold winter mornings as a kid, carefully wrapping them in paper towels so as not to disturb the artfully drawn icing smiley face or burn myself before hopping in the car to go to school.
And when my favorite tribe of food bloggers chose cherries as our monthly ingredient for June I knew I had to try my hand at making some toaster strudels of my own. I didn’t get crazy fancy but instead left these more of the semi-homemade variety, filled with my favorite homemade cherry pie filling and drizzled {or not!} with a sweet cream cheese glaze.
This recipe makes 4 BIG strudels or 8 smaller ones. Serve up the smaller ones for breakfast with some eggs and bacon or serve the big ones for dessert along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You are also well within your rights to leave out the cream cheese and fill them completely with pie filling but I just love how the tangy cream cheese balances out the sweetness from the cherries.
I used crescent roll dough because that’s what I had in the fridge but if you have puff pastry on hand or you’d just rather use it for a flakier crust you can, of course, do that and adjust your bake time accordingly. This recipe is really simple and forgiving so just go with the flow!
Cream Cheese and Cherry Toaster Strudels
Ingredients
- 2 8oz packages crescent rolls
- 1 cup cherry pie filling,, homemade or canned
- 4 oz cream cheese,, softened
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease or line your baking sheet.
- Unroll one package of crescent dough and leave two triangles together to create 4 large rectangles.* Pinch the seams together tightly and then smooth with your finger to get rid of the line.
- Spoon about 1 Tbs of cherries on the left and right side of the rectangle, leaving a space in the middle for the cream cheese. You want more cherries than 'goo' here so that it doesn't ooze out the sides while baking. Add about 1 Tbs of cream cheese between the cherries.
- Cover with the second rectangle of dough and seal the edges with a fork.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm!
Notes
*If you'd like to make 8 small strudels then cut the rectangles in half after pinching the seams together.
