Toasted almonds are sprinkled with a mixture of spices for a perfect party snack or gift for friends, teachers, and neighbors!
I love nuts. And it seems like the more varieties I try the more I find to love. But nuts are expensive. Especially when you’re buying them pre-roasted and salted. They’re often 4 to 5 bucks a pop for the smaller ones! So a very healthy, filling, and tasty snack suddenly becomes cost prohibitive. I remember telling my poor mom a lot when I was living with her and couponing for our groceries that we couldn’t get nuts that week because they weren’t on sale and didn’t have any coupons. Sorry, mom. This post is for you!
I bet you had no idea that just a few aisles down from the snack aisle with it’s shiny blue packages of mixed nuts, roasted nuts, salted nuts is the baking aisle that has basically the same exact varieties for about the same cost and twice the volume. All you have to do is take just five minutes of your time once you get home to toast and salt them yourself and you’ve got nuts to snack on when you need a mid-afternoon pick me up that won’t break the bank.
These are so easy and the flavors and spices are completely customizable. I wanted spicy Mexican flavors so I went with cumin, chili powder, and garlic powder here. Want something Italian? Try parsley, oregano, and garlic powder. Or just regular sea or kosher salt for a delicious snack. I’ll be making another batch of salted almonds and mailing them to my mom with an I’m-so-sorry-I-denied-you-nuts-all-those-months card. Hopefully she’ll forgive me.
Have you ever found a cheaper way to make your favorite snack at home?

There is an asterisk by chili powder but no explanation why in directions. I've read through it a number of times thinking I missed the meaning somewhere in your recipe or notes. Please tell me, it's "makin me crazy". Thank you.

Thanks for letting me know! When I switched recipe cards some things got lost in the import. The asterisk just means that you can adjust the chili powder to fit your taste!

Ohhhh that sounds glorious! I still want to try Zebra cakes because they're our favorite but I'm not so good at sponge cakes.

Such a great idea! I hardly buy the already seasoned nuts too because they're pricey for what you get. I need to try seasoning my own -- a good healthy snack!

I have no idea why, but as I was reading this I started dancing in my chair and singing "spicy nuts spicy nuts make 'em eat 'em spicy nuts". It was quite catchy. Love the Mexican twist on this snack.
