A slushie is one of my favorite summer treats and now I can make one at home!  Use sprite for the kids or make a grown up version with vodka! Make sure to check out these other drinks perfect for summer, too!

One of my favorite summer memories as a kid was when I’d go to visit my grandparents and they’d take me to 7-11 for slushies.  This was a huge treat for me because my dad was totally against this kind of thing.  I’d stand there in awe in front of the huge machine and spend several minutes trying to decide what flavor to choose.

It took me several summers and a whispered conversation with a neighbor kid to realize I could mix flavors.  Mind.  Blown.  From then on I started experimenting with different flavor combinations and my absolute favorite was cherry and blue raspberry.  They made this delightfully purple slush when you mixed them and turned your mouth the same color.

Even now as an adult I only treat myself to a 7-11 slushie once in a blue moon.  So when I was craving a slushie earlier this week with no idea where the nearest 7-11 was in my brand new town I decided to make one.  I figured it couldn’t be that hard and I was sooooo right.  It was really easy {although I really need to find the top to my blender so I don’t have to use the food processor next time} and I love layering the different flavors, too!

I used cherry and blue raspberry Kool-Aid and Sprite for my layers but you can use any drink mix or soda you prefer.  I always hated when my slushies would get watery if I drank them too slowly.  Of course the downside of that is that I’d drink it way too fast and give myself a brain freeze.  So to avoid that this time I mixed up my different flavors and then froze them in ice cube trays.  Perfect!  Adding a little more of the liquid drink during blending helped it reach the perfect consistency.

Layer your flavors to look all pretty then have fun stirring them together to make a new color and flavor combo!  The kids will love that you can have slushies any time you want and you’ll love that you won’t need to make a trip to the gas station for a cool summer treat!
