These patriotic rice krispie pinwheels are a simple and fun dessert perfect for your 4th of July bash!

A couple months ago I saw a post on Pinterest for Rice Krispie Smores Pinwheels. This one right here. I immediately started drooling because I’m a s’mores addict, saved it to try, and then promptly forgot about it. Oops. That is until my blog besties and I decided we were going to do a patriotic themed post to get pumped for the 4th of July and I remembered those pretty but simple pinwheels.

These fun little pinwheels remind me of my patriotic swirl cookies I made for blogland my very first July 4th. They are GOOD and they’ve been made many times since but they’re also time consuming as sugar cookie dough anything often is. And it’s been crazy busy around here. So this recipe was the perfect mix of red, white, and blue festive-ness {a new word for y’all 😉 } with crazy simple. And the result was delicious!

I’m kicking off my easy summer dessert extravaganza with these pretty and simple patriotic rice krispie treat pinwheels that you can make with just 5 ingredients and the kiddos in the kitchen. One of my favorite things to do with kids when I babysat was make rice krispie treats. Mostly because I can make them do all the hard stirring work but also because who doesn’t love to get dirty in the kitchen?? Get the kids in there, make them stir, and you’ve got an adorable dessert perfect for your 4th of July celebration!

You’ll need a jelly roll pan for this one {which isn’t as fancy as it sounds, it’s just a baking sheet with 1/2″ sides on it}, your favorite homemade rice krispie treat recipe, marshmallow fluff, and candy melts. Boom. Done. Oh and gel food coloring, so that technically makes it six ingredients. Whatevs. Still simple. I opted for a red krispie layer and blue candy melts but you could certainly switch it up and do it the other way around! Whatever floats your boat 😉

Patriotic Rice Krispie Pinwheels

Yield: 18 -20 pinwheels
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 cups rice krispie cereal
  • 10 oz mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 13 oz marshmallow fluff
  • 2 12 oz bags blue candy melts
  • Red gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a medium pot or microwave safe bowl melt marshmallows and butter until smooth. Once completely melted, add food coloring until desired red color is achieved. I used about 1/2 tsp.
  2. Gently fold in cereal to red marshmallow mixture and spread into a 10x15 jellyroll pan lined with a silicone baking mat*. Press firmly into an even layer.
  3. Allow to cool for 5 minutes then spread an even layer of marshmallow fluff over the top.
  4. Add candy melts and spread in a thick but even layer. Bake at 200 degrees for 5 minutes then carefully spread the melted candy melts over the top of the fluff, being careful not to marble the two together.
  5. Allow to cool at room temperature for 10 minutes then, starting at the long side, carefully roll into a tight roll, using the silicone mat to press it together firmly.
  6. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. Slice and serve.

Notes

*I tried this recipe first with generously greased wax paper and it stuck horribly to the paper. I absolutely recommend using a silicone baking mat. I have not tried this recipe with greased parchment paper

Agreed! I'm still too nervous to give swiss cake rolls a try so this was a step in the right direction at least ;)

These are so festive! I love ripe crispy treats because somehow I feel like I'm being healthy when I eat them. (never mind all the goodies that are mixed in, I choose to focus on the cereal part and congratulate myself on making a healthy choice)

Omg I feel that way, too! I mean it's rice cereal. Hello, healthy!
